The D.A.R.E Program was adopted by the Alexander City Police Department in 1990, with Officer Jimmy Cleveland being the agencies first certified instructor. Since then, the Police Department has had six other instructors.
The D.A.R.E. program has been taught to grades K-12 in Alexander City schools since 1990. The program is a collaborative effort by Law Enforcement Officers, educators, students, parents and the community to educate children and teens about the dangers of drugs and violence.
The primary mission of the D.A.R.E. program is to provide children with the information and skills they need to live drug and violence-free lives. Additionally, it establishes positive relationships between students and law enforcement, teachers, parents, and other community members.
The D.A.R.E. program helps students develop social competence, communication skills, self-esteem, empathy, decision-making, conflict resolution, sense of purpose, independence, and positive alternatives to bad behavior.
Residents and parents are invited to contact the D.A.R.E officer if they desire further information.
